I'm struggling with the first part of this sentence in terms of word order, any ideas?

O principal mecanismo de resistência consiste na produção de betalactamases de espectro alar-gado (ESBL, do Inglês extended-spectrum beta-lactama- ses) e foi identificado pela primeira vez em 1983, na Alema-nha, numa bactéria da espécie Escherichia coli, tendo-se estendido facilmente a outras enterobacteriáceas.

My attempt: The most frequently used class of antibiotics, beta-lactams, are a common target of resistance mechanisms to bacteria.
