"escaravilha" is not a word. On Google, there are only ten hits, and all ten come from Proz, from this question, no doubt. It is spelled "escaravelha" and in my source (Porto Editora) it refers me to "cravelha" and after searching for a translation into English that makes sense, the closest thing I could find was "peg"

I agree. "Peg" does not fit the bill. If you have a technical dictionary that has other meanings of "cravelha" - obviously one that fits the context, then you would have your answer. I am limited to the Internet other than general, legal and business dictionaries in Portuguese and English. Good luck!!

Asker: my doubt is by the fact that in the text I have to translate there's an explanation saying that "escaravilha" is a kind of coal residue used in furnaces...and the word "peg" doesn't sound appropriate for this context.

Asker: Thank you Richard and Mike. I"ll try to check with the client tomorrow...maybe it's misspelled.

  -> What you say makes perfect sense. There has to be a relevant translation of "cravelha" related to mines that I am unfamiliar with. I don't have any technical dictionaries in Portuguese - hopefully you do. - Mike :)
