Portuguese term or phrase: estancar
I've scoured all the monolingual dictionaries I have at my fingertips and can't seem to find a meaning for this verb other than something along the lines of stopping the flow of a liquid. However, this author twice uses this verb in a different context, namely, as an intransitive verb. Here are the two instances - can anyone advise another definition for this verb that might better fit the context?

1. Ainda que endendesse perfeitamente o que ele ensaiou dizer, não conseguia estancar. - Basically, here the main character is upset that her best friend is trying to talk her out of a decision. The rest of the paragraph unfortunately would make very little sense without extensive backstory.
2. A maior dor que alguém pode sofrer: ser afastado bruscamente daquilo que se é. Chegar na porta de si mesmo, estancar na soleira, não ter um código, nem qualquer outro nome para gritar no meio da noite.

Thank you all!

Explanation:
I would advise the above translation when bringing to halt the flow of a fluid.
for 1) bring himself to a halt.
for 2) halt at the door step
