Explanation:
http://www.cababstractsplus.org/abstracts/Abstract.aspx?AcNo...
ZOOGNOSTICS is the science of the exterior or phenotypic evaluation of animals. It was developed by Bourgelat of Lyon, who published in 1768 a classic book entitled Traité de la Conformation Extérieure du Cheval. The German equivalent is Beurteilungslehre and the English is " principles and practice of livestock judging. " The study of the exterior was called ***ezoognosia*** in Italian, which in 1940 became zoognostica.

The subject is divided into morphological evaluation (conformational and constitutional type, body measurements, locomotion, regional description of head, body, and limbs, age determination, and coat colour) and functional (or physiological) evaluation including performance tests. The first two parts of this book deal exhaustively with these two aspects; the third part applies this material to the phenotypic selection of horses, cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry.

Livestock Judging consists of carefully analyzing animals and measuring them against a standard that is commonly accepted as being ideal. Livestock judging also has been defined as a study of the relationship between an animal's form and function.
