This is a blog about a couple of guys attempting a sailing record, below is one of the sentences relayed by the radio base contact who spoke with them everyday through satellite telephone:

Na comunicação pela manhã Fernando me disse que eles estão sofrendo bastante, desde ontem, com o mar desencontrado.

The only thing I can think of that is near is "in the doldrums" or "stagnant winds"

"The Doldrums" Se refere a uma área do mar, geralmente perto da linha do Equador, onde há pouco ou nenhum vento. Navios regularmente demoravam dias para percorrer distâncias que normalmente seriam cobertas em poucas horas.

Perhaps there is a specific nautical term for a sea whose waves come from two directions at once. However, I could not find it in the time I spent to check this term. Still, I hope It helps.

1. In support of artg’s guess, here is the definition by the Portuguese Navy:

“A ondulação pode ter componente de uma só direcção ou de várias, tornando-se neste caso menos regular (o chamado mar desencontrado).

(…)

Alerta-se que quando presente ondulação com componentes de mais de uma direcção (mar desencontrado ou de enchios) a observação (a distância segura) deverá prolongar-se por um mínimo de 30 minutos …”

2. The equivalent English term for that wave state:
