Tech/Engineering - Ships, Sailing, Maritime / historical term
Portuguese term or phrase: sala grande
Hi all - this term appears in the description of a sixteenth-century ship, presumably quite a grand one, since it was used to transport a princess from Lisbon to France. I assume it is the principal room, with some degree of formality, since it is described as the place where she receives a duke. I'm wondering about something like 'the great room', but wonder if there is a better or more specific term. Thanks in advance.

Ignorou também a tensão que se verificou na sala grande da nau capitânia onde Beatrice aguardava o Duque que, depois das cortesias, a beijou na face, perante a perplexidade dos portugueses presentes

Asker: Thanks Gilmar - I thought about some kind of lounge, but I think the word is too modern for the context. It conjures up images of cruise ships and the like.

quarterdeck

Explanation:
The nau capitania was the ship of the commander of the squadron.

The ceremonial area of a ship and the area reserved for the captain and officers is/was the quarterdeck.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks Mark - I have found one academic text where the term is indeed translated as this. I'll suggest it to the client if nothing else comes up, but my feeling is that it is a covered/closed area.
