hourly-paid (staff)

Explanation:
Hourly-paid support staff are contracted by the School to carry out administrative or other types of support work. They are issued a contract setting out the average number of hours they will work per week, their rate of pay and a statement of the main terms and conditions relating to their appointment.

An hourly-paid appointment should only be made if the appointee will have an irregular work pattern. In such cases, payment will be made as and when work is actually completed according to timesheets submitted to Human Resources.

An hourly-paid appointment should not be made if the appointee:

is working full time (i.e. over 29.5 hours worked per week, which with holiday will exceed 35 hours per week) or
has a regular part-time work pattern.
In these cases a standard contract should be issued, at a fractional FTE (full-time equivalent) if appropriate. For more information on issuing a salaried contract please contact a member of the Recruitment team - see Recruitment Who's who|.

Part-time and hourly-paid staff
There are two types of part-time staff employed in the higher education system:

Fractional part-time staff who are employed on a fraction of the full-time post and therefore should be entitled to pro-rata pay and terms and conditions of service. If you are employed on a fractional contract but not being employed on pro-rata pay and terms and conditions of service then you should contact your UCU branch officer for advice and support.

Hourly paid part-time staff who are the most casual group of staff in the sector - they are employed and paid by the hour, usually on termly or annual (nine month) contracts. They suffer double casualisation by being both part-time and fixed-term.
