"... secondment initially referred to the temporary transfer of an employee to another department. This concept has since developed to cover the loan of an employee to another organisation. Personnel are now seconded into organisations ranging from major commercial concerns through public services and schools to small local groups and charities." (CIPD, 2000)

2.4.1.1 This Guideline defines secondment as follows:

"The temporary loan of an employee to another organisation, or to a different part/post of the same organisation, for a specific purpose for a specific time to the mutual benefit of staff and NHSScotland generally."
