Russian term or phrase: шанежки
Собственно, какой контекст? Вкусный контекст. Присыпанный сверху сахаром и пахнущий детством. Но как донести этот запах англоговорящим, его не вдыхавшим у бабушки на даче - не знаю...
Если есть мысли, буду очень признателен всем ими поделившимся.

neutral  Alexander Demyanov: Use of "shanezhki" in English is extremely obscure. As for "buns", it means any small bread, like sandwich buns, hot dog buns, etc. "Sweet buns" may work better. BTW, Vera's "potato pastries" doesn't cover "шанежки" either.

ШАНЬГА ж. местн.

1. Печеное изделие в виде ватрушки или сдобной лепешки.

"Danish" doesn't seem to work because "danish" is made of multi-layered butter-rich flaky dough.

"Scone" is another popular type of pastry but scone dough is closer to "коржик".

"Pie" seems to cover just about everything but then your reader will hardly get an image of "шанежка".

I may know what you need. The word "roll" definitely covers "шанежка". There are many different kinds of "rolls" but it's also the case with "шанежки". E.g. look at these "chese rolls": http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Cottage-Cheese-Rolls/Detail.asp...

Look at "sweet buns":
