Russian term or phrase: nalin
It is a Russian family name. The termination "in" is rather common in slavic surnames, isn't it? (Gagarin,Yeltsin,Safin,Trigorin,Putin, etc)
Victor Nalin
English translation:it CAN be a Russian family name as well.
Explanation:
though somewhat rare.
The termination "in" corresponds to the name of an anchestor (here:NAL+in), but there are no name Nal in Russian. The Google search comes up with some Nalins, some of them are Russians.
BTW, there is an Indian film producer whose name is Nalin too.

In the modern Russian slang the word "nal" means "cash"
(from "NALichnye dengi). I don"t know other meanings.

Good luck!

Thanks, Mr.Strakhov. The name of my family has certainly nothing to do with the filmaker, since they came from the north of Italy. The name is very rare there and only in the north and with recent recordings, ie. it cannot be found in old registrations (at least before the XVI century), leading me to believe it is an imigrant family. It could be slovene. However, I only found people with this surname(not counting the ones from Indian/Pakistani inheritance)in Russia and in Germany.
