Russian term or phrase: Групком писателей
Я тогда была членом Групкома писателей...

My knowledge of Soviet administrative structures is, alas, very limited. So far I'm translating it as "Group Committee of Writers" but this will definitely require an explanatory footnote. What did the Групком писателей do? Is it in any way linked to the Союз писателей?

Asker: I'm looking more for an explanation than a translation. What did the Групком писателей do exactly? This is for the explanatory footnote.

Writers' circles committee/Committee of Writers Circles

Explanation:
For ex;Committee of Moscow Writers Circles
групком-групповой комитет - на английском лучше передать как не "group", а "circle" мое мнение
/Writers' Collective Committee just another version, not so suitable

Групповой комитет - как часть Союза писателей СССР, объединение писателей в регионах СССР, например Московский группком писателей и т.д.

disagree  The Misha: I am sure you have good reasons for your opinion, but the result is still very cryptic and altogether unidiomatic

Asker: Thank you!

Asker: Boris, could you suggest local writers' union or something like that as an answer? I would like to award you the points since your link has been invaluable for drafting my footnote.

agree  The Misha: Based on the description in that book, we'd call it a (local) writers' union in English.
