"Godspeed" poses an interesting conundrum for me.
Yes, it is the "formally correct" translation.
However, I agree with Nicky that (as a native speaker of English) I have NEVER heard this expression used outside of a Shakespearean tragedy.
And yet, Ivan Borshcevsky is also correct: while the manuscript itself is fairly recent, this particular excerpt is set in the late 1920's.
Both arguments - that the phrase is currently dated, while it does fit the antiquated setting - bear merit.
So I decided to bypass this entire issue altogether, by going with a different option: "Vaya con Dios" (or was that another message board? ;) |
