Russian term or phrase: розовые сопли
Вот он, тот самый образ «мужика», только без
розовых соплей и псевдологических «природных» теорий...

The above is the sentence which I came across in an article about 'real' men. I get that you could translate it as 'pink snot', but that lacks any sort of context for me, so I was wondering what an english equivalent might be.

There's no one right answer here, of course. It all depends on the context, the audience and on how literal you want to be.

mawkish/mawkishness

Explanation:
Предлагаю этот вариант перевода, исходя из значения выражения "розовые сопли", которое неплохо объясняется вот здесь: http://m-petra.livejournal.com/71124.html. Также см. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/mawkish

pansy, pansycake

Explanation:
A male who lacks the appropriate masculinity, kind of displays a shade of purple and flower-like behavior; does not have a nerve to act manly, girly in behavior.

Example sentence(s):
  • Quit being such a pansycake and ask the girl out!
  • Peter, you're scared to touch a worm?? you are such a pansy!

rose-colored sentiment

Explanation:
The way I read that sentence, the "розовые сопли" refers to the written image of the man, not his character. So, it's the description without the use of "розовые сопли," (meaning one not overwrought with emotion, romantic ideas, etc.) not the man himself. Rose-colored sentiment is play on rose-colored glasses, which I think, works here.

agree  The Misha: This is the most natural way of putting it so far. I thought of rose-colored glasses too, but I think I have a better one. You are on. Good to have you back.
