Only because polemical or polemic is not a commonly used word -- controversial is more accessible.

: "controversial" is often associated with "inconsistent" and "confusing" whereas a "polemical" opinion can be quite coherent. "Полемический" does not necessarily "arouse" controversy, it may resolve an existing one.

IronDog, I don't know what dictionary you've been using, but controversial does not mean inconsistent or confusing. Here's the definition from wiktionary: Arousing controversy—a debate, discussion of opposing opinions; strife
