polusapogi mid-calf boots Explanation: Judging by these pictures: http://marko.by/ru/catalog/autumn/women/half-top-boots/ http://www.technoavia.ru/katalog/spetsobuv/rezin/5-211.htm http://www.icetrade.by/mcet/TGroundsNew.nsf/0/D53491B40B0C65... and these: http://www.shoes.com/category.asp?c=Womens|Boots|Mid-Calf&sc... ...I would say that "mid-calf boots" would seem entirely accurate. "Half-boots" *might* be an option, depending on the context: "Kolchin's Leather Footwear Classification Scheme: Group 1 - soft leather Type 1 - bashmaki, ankle-high shoes Type 2 - sapogi and *polusapozhki*, boots and *half-boots* Type 3 - porshni, slippers" http://www.strangelove.net/~kieser/Russia/KWCfeet.html Chambers gives "a boot reaching halfway to the knee" for "half-boots"... and yet "half-boots" is apparently a little old-fashioned now: "Tied shoes went out of fashion for women mid-Regency and were replaced by low, lace-up footwear called half-boots. They were often made of nankeen, a hard-wearing yellow cotton fabric, but also of a variety of materials; fashion plates often show them in black leather..." http://www.songsmyth.com/shoes.html So on balance, I think I'd go for "mid-calf boots". |
