The context is, I hope, clear. It's a short text on a Soviet watch manufacturer which issued a new model in the 1960's. I wondered just about auotmatic but it doesn't quite fit because of the structure of the sentence.

Any ideas?

It seems that this is what the author means. I don't know why you object the "automatic" version, but for me it is the most appropriate option in this context. It is about very special watches, and in the Soviet Union self-winding watches were very special things.
