. On the other hand, we define a smaller grid with a denser spatial sampling in the region where melt-related processes are expected to take place; here we interpolate variables such as temperature, viscosity and matrix velocity from the coarse grid to the fine one and observe variables related to melt dynamics, such as depletion/enrichment, latent heat and melt production. Можно, конечно, написать что-то вроде \"...lines of the grid...\", но это излишне. Тем более, что lines thickening ассоциируется с каким-нибудь \"утолщением\".

Explanation:
More context would help, however if it's about adaptive mesh (computer simulations), or graded mesh in math, then, perhaps, my answer is OK. You can look up for it in the reference below.

\'dense regions on the mesh\', or \'area with a finer mesh\', \'region with increasing number of mesh points\'

I think the text is about \'mesh\'

I can be wrong, but after reading the whole sentence, I started to believe that Nicon’s text is about physics (not math), i.e., about magnetic/electric field lines. If that’s the case, “mesh” is irrelevant. The answer can be: “Areas where Field lines are close together” OR “Areas with increasing density of Field lines”. There are plenty of English references on electromagnetism that are using these terms: 1) Thus the field is strong when the field lines are close together and weak when the field lines are far apart. http://www.geom.umn.edu/~thurman/calcIII/Lab22/EM.html 2) The intensity of the magnetic field is represented by the spacing of the magnetic field lines; a strong magnetic field has the lines close together http://solar.physics.montana.edu/YPOP/Spotlight/Magnetic/loi... , and many more.
However if the text is about a surface of a 3D (or 2D) grid function, then I would go with Montefiore’s version. Though, I am not sure how to tie up ‘line convergence on the grid’ with charged particle acceleration.
