It is obvious that the Russian translator made 2 errors: (i) called the ratio of two means as a deviation; (ii) translated "statistically significant (ratio)" as "statistical (deviation)".

My another suggestion is that the Russian translator meant not "статистическое отклонение", but "статистически значимое отклонение" (significant deviation), because "significant" is correctly translated into Russian as "статистически значимый". The term "статистическое отклонение" is rare enough and, in my opinion, is an incorrect form of "статистически значимое отклонение".

Thank you for your comments. I suspected there might be something wrong in the Russian! This may call for a footnote added to my translation (I also notice that the Russian says '30 metres' where the English says '30.3 metres').

Dylan, it's obvious that the Russian text you're translating is a wrong translation of the Otsuka's study. In this study, there are two means (one for each group) and only one standard deviation (?), 0.83 (no dimension, why?). Both means must have their own (different) standard deviations. The deviations must have dimensions (m). A ratio of the means (as in the reference) is dimensionless, and there is only one ratio, 0.83, of the two numbers. To me, the Russian translator did not understand this point in the Otsuka study and made a wrong translation. The provided reference is written by native English-speaking authors and is definitely correct.

ACD - absolute claudication distance - OK, I suppose that's another way of saying maximum walking distance.
Your link looks vaguely like the Russian text, but I can't see how it matches the Russian in terms of the finer detail. Are they really talking about a ratio? This isn't clear from the words "статистическое отклонение…". It isn't clear to me, at any rate!
