Protection of human/civil rights
Victor
human rights activist
Explanation:
When we speak of human liberties and rights that are protected in many countries by institutions and individuals other than governmental bodies or public servants, we should refer to the terms like human rights activist, member of human rights group, human right monitor. The terms advocate, protector (not to mention lawyers, barristers) are never used by human rights activists themselves.

protector of rights

Explanation:
See the context for the phrase above:
She has a reputation for being an ardent protector of individuals' liberties. — У нее репутация страстного защитника личных свобод. (Lingvo 6.0)
Another possible version might be (rights) advocate (Note that avocate and advocacy has a broader meaning than Russian advokat).

human rights advocate; or human rights defender; but under no circumstances "lawyer" or "barrister"

Explanation:
This word is usually used in Russian when speaking about dissidents or those actively, sometimes professionally, engaged in human rights protection activities. In the Soviet times you could only hear this word on the air of foreign radio stations. Examples of 'pravozashchitniks' are Academician Sakharov, his widow Yelena Bonner, Kovalyov. Actually, this penomenon is not so common in the countries of the Western democracy.

I have not seen it in any of the dictionaries so far, so I can propose an equivalent according to the meaning.
