Russian term or phrase: обратная динамика (in this context)
The author is talking about the Cyrillic letter 'Э' and how it differs from the Cyrillic 'С'. Here is the sentence:

"Э можно было бы считать перевернутой С, если бы не обратная динамика и средний штрих."

I know what the author is trying to say, which is that the letter Э looks like it is moving backwards compared to the letter C which looks like it is moving forwards (from left to right) with the movement of the text. However, I can't decide the best way to translate 'динамика'. The author uses it a lot to describe the implied movement of individual letters (the letter Я also has an 'обратная динамика' for example) and sometimes the movement of a word or a line of text.

'Backwards movement'? 'Backwards motion'? 'Backwards momentum'?

All suggestions most gratefully received and thanks in advance.

English translation:Inverse dynamics
Explanation:
Maybe "reverse dynamics". This not only deals with the letter orientation. In typography, it's about the relationship between this orientation and the viewer's eye movement. Whether or not the letter creates an obstruction to this movement or whether it moves in line with the eye movement. So, I'd stick to the author's terminology. I'm sure there are English terms for that in typography, but I haven't found any.

Форма букв может быть статичной или динамичной... Важна также направленность динамики: если форма знака как бы направлена вправо, то есть в направлении чтения, динамика называется прямой (например, у букв В, Е, K, Р, R), а если влево, против направлении чтения, обратной (например, у букв З, Э, Я). Следует заметить, что речь идет о преимущественном направлении динамики, поскольку форме каждого знака присущи и динамические, и статические особенности (илл. 8 и 9). http://www.paratype.ru/e-zine/issue02/knowhow.htm

eg. letter H is static which is the opposite of dynamic. http://www.fonts.com/content/learning/fontology/level-1/type...

If you want to simplify the terminology, left-facing or backward-facing would suffice.

[hadn't it] looked left/the opposite/other way too

Explanation:
That обратная динамика of your is somewhat hard to understand in Russian. Neither Э nor C moves nowhere; what dynamics? Even though you get it across somehow, it'll take a stretch of creative imagination.
'Back(ward)' and 'forward' in writing are somewhat misnomers if you remember the direction of Arabic, Hebrew or Aramaic scripts or vertical Chinese and Japanese lines of characters. Or Micenic bustrophedon ;-)
