Russian term or phrase: A symbol
A table in a book I'm translating has this symbol in several cells: «

Here's an excerpt from the table in which this symbol appears several times, column headings first, separated by slashes:

Система орудий/Дистанция/Снаряд/Количество выстрелов/
Количество пробоин/Результаты

Then a row, with the cells in the table again separated by slashes:

75 мм пушка/120 м//Подкалиберный/1/1/Вмятина плубиной 40 мм

Followed by another two rows:

≪/≪/Бронебойный/1/1/≪≪ 50 мм
85 мм зенитнач пушка/≪/Бронебойный/2/2/≪≪ 55 мм

I have a vague recollection that it's the Russian version of the "ditto" symbol. In other words, in the first cell where the symbol is used it stands for "85 мм пушка." Am I right?

Explanation:
Actually ≪ have special meaning "much less" in Russian (and not only in Russian), but in your case it's obviously used instead of "ditto", which is more often used to be "-"

So, it could be left as is or "translated" as something like "---//---" commonly used in such cases

>> Asker: I have to disagree with the "---". In an English-language publication that would mean "no entry" in that cell of the table.

The same is in Russian-language papers. But in this context another meaning would be obvious. Or choose another (more creative ;) option "======", "*****", etc

agree  *Alena*: I can't imagine anything else rather than 'the same' in the given context. ---//--- with 2 slashes inside was used for handwriting texts, but I’ve seen ---, ###, = / = , etc - there is no steady rule, so people print whatever suits their tastes.
