Susan, the difference between водный камень и окаменевшие накипи is very little: the former just builds up on surfaces that come in contact with water while the latter builds up in coffee-makers and tea-pots from boiling water (i.e. накипи are formed through the heating process). They are sometimes called "calcium build-up". I am sure you have your own examples of this in your kitchen. :-))

Since really all the answers were right, I'd like to give everybody the points, but Angela provided useful information as well as getting peer votes. Thanks to everybody. And yes, I have plenty of bottles of vile chemicals under my kitchen sink for dealings with these problems, as I live in an area that has very hard water!
