2Judith. As a persnickety editor myself, I'm all for zapping superfluous words, but sometimes one may remove so many, that a sentence has no breathing room. To my ear, "count myself as a" is interchangeable with "see myself as a," and I think the slight element of modality suits this context. Thanks for the opportunity to reflect on that.

  -> Picky, picky! Sure, it's fine w/o "as," but mandatory to remove? I'd say it - with "count," not "consider" - and plenty of authors do. See link above. Or, do you think "as" is only acceptable before an adj or participle? / Continued above as a note.
