Russian term or phrase: оптимизировать вычисления в десятки миллионов раз
Во второй и третьей частях этой работы удалось построить усредненную систему и диффузионную аппроксимацию, анализ которых с помощью современных компьютерных технологий позволяет оптимизировать вычисления в десятки миллионов раз.

improve computational performance by a factor of...
Explanation:
Possibly "efficiency" instead of "performance".

Can't agree with optimising algorithm here. An improvement on that scale means they have found a new, much better algorithm rather then tweaked and fine-tuned existing one.

reduce the computation time by a factor of 10^7

Explanation:
Осмелюсь предположить, что имеется в виду уменьшение времени, затраченного на вычисления. "Оптимизировать в ... раз" звучит как-то не по-русски.

Example sentence(s):
  • These techniques reduce the computation time by a factor of 20 in experiments on color and texture image vectors.
  • Moreover, there are optimizations in the direction of compiling the real time computations made by the IBR and the tutor that might reduce computational time by a factor of ten.

neutral  Susan Welsh: I read it as "tens of millions," rather than such a specific number as 10^7. If they wanted to say 10^7, I should think they would say so.

-> Thank you for your comment, may be you are right. I rather consider 10^7 as an order of magnitude, not a specific number.

optimize away hundreds of megaflops

Explanation:
десятки миллионов раз = сотни миллионов; "оптимизировать вычисления" КМК, означает в данном случае "сократить объем вычислений".

neutral  Susan Welsh: See discussion on "megaflops." Also, "optimize away" is a strange phrase to my ear.

disagree  Anton Konashenok: MFLOPS - абсолютная единица производительности (миллион операций с плавающей запятой в секунду), и об этом в исходном тексте ничего не говорится... FLOPS правильно пишется заглавными буквами. // абсолютные величины путать с относительными никак нельзя
29 mins
-> Да, в тексте относительная единица. Но Вы же не станете утверждать, что она не имеет ничего общего с производительностью? // Спутали все, а несогласны только со мной :) наверное, у меня это вышло с особым цинизмом.

to allow computing speed that is tens of millions of times faster

Explanation:
I think it is best, if possible, to keep the positive directionality of "optimizing," rather than shifting to the word "reducing," even if the meaning is the same.

optimize the [computational/numerical] code OR algorithm by a factor of tens of millions

Explanation:
Computations are hardly ever "optimized by a factor"

Algorithms and codes are, indeed (see references)

In the original context, "algorithm" is simply omitted without loss of meaning
In the translation, "computational/numerical" may be omitted for a similar reason

--------------------------------------------------

This is perfectly clear:
1. In contexts of this kind, a computation means an instance of computing a problem using an algorithm or a code for a particular set of parameter values.
2. If the code is extensive enough to be optimizable by so a large factor, it is obviously designed to compute a variety of problems of a certain type.
3. An optimization implies that the computational complexity is reduced by a factor.
4. Once this is done, the solution of a problem solvable by the algorithm will require a reduced amount of resources
It can be said that an algorithm must be optimized to significantly reduce computational costs
In other words, the computational costs of particular computations cannot be reduced without optimizing the algorithm

Computational cost is frequently used as a synonym of computational complexity.
Computational complexity is a characteristic of algorithms.
It can be quantified in a number of ways by different measures.
