agree  Rachel Douglas: With "progress makes"! "Progress in the creation and improvement of m.m. makes this research ... even more timely [relevant, urgent]." Maybe even drop "Progress in" - "The creation of new m.m., and their improvement, make..." / Second version's too wordy.
