Russian term or phrase: утилизация судов
In a document on nuclear icebreakers, the concept of утилизиция comes up frequently, such as "утилизация ледокола запланирована на 2015." Does this mean, "the icebreaker is scheduled to be scrapped in 2015," or is there a better word than scrapped? The same document also uses the phrase "была разрезана на металлолом" in a few spots, so is there a difference between the two? Any ideas will help. Thanks.

  -> Thanks, Judith. I guess it depends on the overall tone. I was thinking about chop shops, although they handle more cars than icebreakers.

  -> Thank you. Of course dealing with nuclear-powered icebreakers is more complicated than scrapping a car, but I shouldn't have mentioned chop shops because actually "chop" is not slang, and I believe "scrap choppers" can be rather sophisticated machines.
agree  Dylan Edwards: "Scrapped" often implies that the materials are going to be used ("the ship is to be broken up and scrapped"). The term "shipbreaking" is also worth considering, and phrases such as "the ship is to be broken (up)", "broken up for scrap".
