Russian term or phrase: смотровая площадка
У дороги на смотровой площадке стоит автомобиль, а рядом замечаем тропу, уходящую вниз.

Дорога проходит в горах, а в одном месте специальная площадка для туристов, с которой можно любоваться видом или спуститься вниз.
Вот как эта самая площадка обычно называется?

agree  Henry Schroeder: I think we just said "view point" in my childhood, http://www.google.com/search?hl=de&q=highway trip "view poin... I think "vista point" might be odd Denglish, since I get a lot of hits for it on my german computer too, but fewer american ones

agree  David Knowles: "scenic overlook" - very American! Also "viewing point"
2 hrs
  -> Thanks, David.

agree  Vladimir Dubisskiy: and very Canadian too! Though definitely 'viewing point' (not 'observation'). And NO 'vista' (here in BC). Here, we have "viewing" everywhere; no 'observation' which seems to be more about 'наблюдение', methink.
2 hrs
  -> Thanks, Vladimir. However, "observation point" is widely used in similar contexts.

agree  Anton Konashenok: Looks like every state (or at least region) invents its own way to express it
3 hrs
  -> Thanks, Anton.

agree  Lenny Rossolovski: That's exactly how I'd say that
4 hrs
  -> Thanks, Lenny.

agree  Dorene Cornwell: or scenic outlook
4 hrs
  -> Thanks, Dorene. "Overlook" is much more common, though.
