Тело длиной 1—7 см состоит из головогруди, груди из 2 члеников и брюшка из 10 члеников; покрыто длинными волосками. Окраска буро-жёлтая или пёстрая. На головогруди пара срединных и пара боковых рудиментарных глаз. Конечностей 6 пар; 1-я пара — клешнеобразные хелицеры — служит для разрывания добычи и защиты; 2-я — ного-щупальца, или педипальпы, — для ощупывания и схватывания добычи; 3-я — органы осязания; 4—6-я — бегательные ноги. С. раздельнополы; яйцекладущи; развитие без метаморфоза. 570 видов. Распространены в тропиках и субтропиках. В СССР около 70 видов — на Ю.
