Jezik koji ova deca slušaju ima slabije razvijenu sintaksu i u većoj meri obiluje neodređenostima i zamenicama, što je posledica toga da roditelji ove dece obično imaju manji nivo obrazovanja.Ovakav „ograničeni jezički kod“, uz restriktivnije ponašanje roditelja prema deci, ne pogoduje intelektualnom razvoju. Korišćenje jezika i stimulacija iz okruženja, ključni su faktori uspešnog intelektualnog napredovanja, ovladavanja pojmovima i razvijanja misaonih procesa i viših mentalnih funkcija. Sve ovo ne znači da ta deca nemaju iste potencijale poput dece iz viših društvenih slojeva, naprotiv.
