Nakon Drugog svetskog rata, odredbama Zakona o Narodnoj miliciji iz 1946. godine, definisana je narodna milicija kao izvršni organ državne uprave u narodnim republikama i administrativno-teritorijalnim jedinicama sa zadatkom očuvanja javnog reda i mira, državne, društvene i privatne imovine i bezbednosti građana, kao i za pomoć organima radi obezbeđenja pravnog poretka. Pored toga, Ministar unutrašnjih poslova imao je ovlašćenja da pravilnikom propiše osnivanje posebnih grana narodne milicije za izvršenje zadataka iz nadležnosti FNRJ, te je tako u industrijskim preduzećima, zavodima i ustanovama, obrazovana industrijsko-zavodska narodna milicija.

  -> Obzirom da se radi o običnoj državnoj policijskoj službi, mislim da bi upotrebom reči militia samo nepotrebno zbunili engleskog čitaoca i opteretili tekst traženjem logike kojom su se vodili Staljin i Tito prilikom imenovanja institucije.
