Spanish term or phrase: sortear
The child was taken to a man who knows how to read coca leaves....

In Andean Spanish, the act of reading the leaves is expressed with 'sortear'... e.g. Sabe sortear el futuro'

I suppose 'read' isn't the most accurate description of what he's doing... I thought of using 'divine the future', but I'm not sure about this either.

What do you think?

predict the future
Explanation:
You might want to say "predict a person's future" to note that he is predicting the future of an individual. Read is also acceptable, by the way, as he is "reading" leaves.

reading/telling (the child's) fortune

Explanation:
I have chosen to include "fortune" in the target term, to reflect the "sort" root element of the verb "sortear".

Explanation:
I agree with your translation; read is completely normal for a fortune-telling activity that involves leaves.

Example sentence(s):
  • it still seems so random that people actually read tea leaves in order to predict future events.
