Spanish term or phrase: En tiempos remotos
En tiempos remotos, la gente vivía en contacto directo con la naturaleza y dependía de ella.

I can't quite get the proper sense of this in English- in eras long passed, in ancient times, many ages ago... There is no specific time context or date, just an idea of a long time ago.

What do you all think?

neutral  Muriel Vasconcellos: I think it's too specific. Considering the rest of the context, it could be more recent. I have commented in the discussion and in my answer on the meaning of 'ancient'.

in early times

Explanation:
I think this is more the intended meaning in the context. 'Early' can be taken in relation to the particular culture. For example, I live near Indian lands in California, and 'early times' for those groups were more recent than the usual definition of 'ancient'.
