I think a bvery non-literal translation is appropriate here e.g.
"It is obvious then that evidence for behavior patterns need to be large-scale, painted on a broad, many-layered, canvas".

Yes, probably too free. And what I meant was many paint layers rather than canvas layers :-) But I was just suggesting a possible approach rather than a final product.

Asker: Although I did wonder if your suggestion wasn't a little too free, due to sudden and unexpected time constraints on the project I didn't have much time to play around with it and went for something very similar to your answer. It sounds good and conveys the general meaning. Thanks!
