THis is a material used by a contemporary Argentine artist:

El artista colgó de cinco mástiles sobre una de las paredes banderas confeccionadas con mantas blancas apaga-llamas ennegrecidas a partir de la acumulación de hollín.

Do flash suppressors have white cloths in them that get stained with soot? Or does the artist use the suppressor to stain a piece of cloth? I am not familiar with the mechanism of a flash suppressor, so can't make the leap.

  -> I wouldn't spoil such a sumptuous repast with a debate about punctuation :-)
agree  Charles Davis: I am always in the mood for a debate about punctuation :-) The answer to Peter's point is that without a hyphen it means a fire blanket that is white, and that a blanket for white fire would be a white-fire blanket. The absence of a hyphen is informative.

  -> I'm a founding member of the Hyphen Appreciation Society, but there's no such thing as a white fire, so the meaning is obvious from the context :-)
agree  Carol Gullidge: No hyphen is required here! For the fire to be white in this instance, there would have to be a hyphen between "white" and "fire". A white-fire blanket would be a blanket for white fire. See the Guardian style guide on hyphenating adjectives before nouns
