Explanation:
Por como viene el texto, me parece que hace referencia a un mar sin vida vida o sin las condiciones propicias para que esta se desarrolle, es decir, sin el «caldo primigenio» que dio origen a la vida.

También podrías optar por algo menos metafórico y usar directamente lifeless sea, por ejemplo.

Así lo interpreto yo, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que es un texto más literario que científico.
