The prefect of the Department, or area of control is called a Prefecture, but in various post-Roman Empire cases without the prefect of the Prefecture or Vice versa. There is also a feature where you can look up terms previously posted on ProZ - under Terminology, Term Search. BTW, "soltero" is in any dictionary.

Explanation:
From what I can find, "alcalde" and "prefecto" are used interchangeably in Venezuela, at the level of the municipio. In either case, it refers to the top administrative official.

To render "municipio" as "municipality" is misleading, at least for readers of US English. In the US, a municipality is an urban area with an organized government, i.e. a city or a town. A "municipio", almost anywhere in the Spanish-speaking world, is more like a county than anything else in the USA, with territory that includes rural as well as urban areas.

I always leave "municipio" untranslated and add an explanatory footnote the first time it occurs in a document.

neutral  Taña Dalglish: A very novel approach to "municipio", I must say, and not one of the usually problematic words/Disagree (pls. look at ProZ glossary as it relates to the word "municipio as used in Venezuela). I believe you are trying to localise the term & that won't work

  -> Taña, to render "municipio" with "municipality" would be so inaccurate as to actually be misleading in US English; just as it would be misleading to render "notario público" as "notary public". Both are "false friends", in US English at least.

  -> To a US reader, "prefect" would mean nothing in a modern-day context without some serious research. From what I can find, a Venezuelan "prefecto" is an administrative official. I admit the correspondence isn't perfect.
