Hi,

I'm translating a paper about cable-stayed bridges and the word AXIL is used as a noun throughout the text. I initially thought it was a synonym of axis, but now I'm doubting myself. The only dictionary definitions of AXIL are to do with botany (the upper angle between a leaf stalk or branch and the stem or trunk from which it is growing), which I suppose could be applied to bridge design.

Could anyone lend a hand? Thanks!

philgoddard: If I'd had to guess the Spanish for "axial", I'd have said "axial".

-> So would I, and we'd have been right, but apparently axil is an alternative. The DRAE entry for axil is "1. adj. axial". Thanks!
