Tech/Engineering - Construction / Civil Engineering / earth dam with clay core
Spanish term or phrase: zona de sombra
This is a from a description of an earth dam with clay core that also houses a hydroelectric power station: "Se proyecta una sección constituida por un núcleo impermeable arcilloso, con inclinación hacia aguas abajo, con espaldones granulares de aguas arriba y aguas abajo, filtros de transición y una zona de sombra situada aguas abajo del núcleo, en el interior de la sección." Could "zona de sombra" refer to the part above the upper seepage level (phreatic line)?

Yes, I had pretty well come to that conclusion: there is a transition zone marked downstream of the core in most cross-sections. Thanks bigedsenior.

That is a very good idea James, as I still don't have a clear picture what the "zona de sombra" is. Good luck.

Asker: Thanks Tania. Very good references but... I have asked the client for the missing diagrams so next week I will be able to get a clearer idea of what they are talking about by comparing them with the very good selection of dam cross-sections that can be found on the web.
