Spanish term or phrase: Gambas langostineras
Hi,

What exactly are the prawns 'gambas langostineras' known as in English? I have found, 'Argentinian red shrimps' (which is very specific), 'Red king prawns', 'Wild shrimps'.

It is for a recipe book; the recipe is Chicken and prawn brochette with sea and mountain sauce.

Thanks!

Prawns
Explanation:
While the latin denomination is useful, I do not believe all ¨gambas langostineras¨are Penaeus indicus.
Read here:

And if you look at one of the many companies selling them you can see they are described as ¨langostino austral/prawn¨
Gamba langostinera cruda N 3 2Kg Congelado

Since it is for a recipe and I have never seen one requesting ¨Indian white prawns¨I believe it is safe to translate the term as ¨prawn¨.

Indian white prawn

Explanation:
Penaeus indicus is the name in Latin. When I have this problem, I always try to find the Latin name and then into the target language.

Example sentence(s):
  • Indian white prawn - Penaeus indicus. H. Milne Edwards, 1837 [Penaeidae]. FAO official common names: Fr - Crevette blanche des Indes; ...
  • gambón, gamba langostinera, langostino ... en todos los puertos de la costa andaluza, un aumentativo de gamba para reflejar el mayor grosor de esta ...

agree  Carol Gullidge: A reliable technique, which I frequently use for names of plant species and other flora and fauna. Note that it’s best to avoid “shrimps” if this might be for a UK target audience

agree  Rachel Fell: probably best to leave it vague - it's not as though the correct species could necessarily be found

agree  Andy Watkinson: If you don't believe it's Indicus, could it be Parapenaeus longirostris? And, if so, wouldn't this be "Deep-water rose shrimp"? Highly common in Cadiz and nearby And wouldn't it simply be a lot more pragmatic to do as you suggest and call it a "prawn?

giant king prawns

Explanation:
In Mexico a ¨langostino¨ is only the ¨dendrobanchiata¨ or the ¨macrobrachium. The options seem these¨giant king prawns green¨ from Autralia or the¨malayan prawns.¨
