English translation:trapped key
Explanation:
Trapped key interlocking utilizes locks and keys for sequential control of equipment and machinery to ensure safe operation. Trapped key interlocks are widely used to ensure safe access to potentially live or dangerous plant or equipment in an industrial setting.

This is a trapped key interlock on the door of an electrical switchgear cabinet. It is attached with one-way security screws to discourage casual removal, which would defeat the interlock scheme.
A safe sequence of operations is enabled through transfer of keys that are either trapped or released in a predetermined order. For example, a key is used to isolate a power source (circuit breaker or supply valve), this key is then released and can then be used to gain access through a gate or door to a high risk area by inserting it into an access lock. The key will then remain trapped until the gate or door is closed. A personnel or safety key can be released from the access lock, this ensures that the gate or door can not be closed and the initial key released until this personnel or safety key is returned. This provides increased operator safety.

Castell has produced two sets of training material, ‘Trapped Key Interlocking in the Switchgear Industry’ and ‘Efficient and Safe Loading’, along with certified technical guides. The guides are used to build awareness of drivers within the industry, the benefits of using trapped key interlocking and how the technology can be applied to real-life situations.

Our Trapped Key Solenoid Release Unit electrically isolates machinery to improve access safety. The unit consists of a rotary power switch and a solenoid. The trapped key can be removed once an external signal is given to its internal solenoid locking mechanism. An indicator light on the solenoid release unit shows when the trapped key can be removed—that is, when power is applied to the solenoid. The solenoid signal only needs to be present when key removal is necessary.

tGard is the new innovative approach to controlling access to hazardous machinery and equipment. It is a compact metal bodied system that enables the configuration of various safety products including electrical safety gate switches (with or without guard locking), mechanical trapped key interlocks, and electrical operator controls, either as separate devices or integrated into one device.

agree  Toni Castano: I think it´s the same as "sistema de atrapamiento de llave".

  -> Thank you, Toni :-)

agree  Jennifer Levey: Some manufacturers call it a "captive key" (which better reflects the term in Asker's ST). The ST extract seems to refer to operation of a "key exchange unit" (intermediate component of many trapped-key interlock systems).

  -> I had got as far a finding 'llave de captura', but hadn't found the English equivalent! Thank you, Robin :-)
