(along a) distance of 70 m upstream and 70 m downstream Explanation: You're right: "above and below each bank" doesn't make much sense. I think "arriba" and "abajo" means "aguas arriba" and "aguas abajo": upstream and downstream, measured, therefore, from a given point. This does make sense. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2013-02-06 06:27:12 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- "Arriba de" and "abajo de" aren't the way to say "above" and "below" in Spanish. "Abajo de" is not a prepositional phrase; "abajo" is an adverb, and "de" goes with "una longitud". -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2013-02-06 06:31:07 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- So you can then continue as you have it: "on either bank", or "on either side", since presumably the underwater plants are not actually on the bank. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 3 hrs (2013-02-06 08:32:38 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- You could also say "for a distance" or perhaps "over a distance", but "along" is a way of reflecting "longitud". |
