Spanish to English translations [PRO] Food & Drink / Restaurant menu
Spanish term or phrase:habas mata
Only context I have is that it is a starter.... broad beans (baby broad beans?), but what about the "mata" part? Anyone out there know, please? Thanks,
Sorry about that; I didn't look closely. The alleged biblical explanation doesn't make any sense. There's another theory that the saying comes from a Hispano-Arabic source, but I'm going to resist the temptation to try to pin it down.
is not in the Old Testament. Maybe it is in one of the apocryphal books, but the article doesn't even give the reference (book, chapter, verse).
I heard someone once say that ____ had the personality of a box of rocks! I wonder who ever thought of that expression, or rather, why. I tried to imagine what that personality would be like. Probably the same as being dumber than a bean bush!
Will read links tomorrow as they look really great. Who knew re using the brand in such a context... What I was trying to say re the plant (apologies if a bit long-windedly because of trying to provide “proof”) was that in UK English I would not write “bush broad beans” as, to my knowledge, all broad beans grow that way here so, for me, in UK English it is ‘stating the obvious’ (whereas with other beans there are different growing habits so it might occur). But it is a minor point and it is clearly irrelevant if mata refers to the brand. :-)
Broad beans do grow on a "mata". But if what they mean is that they are fresh, I can't imagine them using the expression "habas mata". It would be like saying "manzanas árbol". They'd say "habas frescas" or "habas de temporada".
Pedro Salcedo, the chef at Restaurante Juanito in Baeza, Jaén, uses Mata beans (the brand). His recipe for "Habitas con jamón y huevo sobre patata confitada y paletilla de cabrito asado en aceite de oliva virgen extra" includes "1 lata de habas MATA".

Ask the restaurant if they are referring to the Mata brand. Maybe it isn´t capitalized because it has become a household word, kind of like kleenex. I don´t know why people would need to know if they are EATING bush or pole beans because they aren´t GROWING them (unless they perceive the bush type better). So brand name probably makes most sense.
I found this fascinating as in the UK Broad Beans are all usually bush bean size (i.e. bush is implied), there are dwarf varieties but even the bigger ones are not that tall and just need staking rather than poles. And all the ones I've ever seen or grown don't climb or wind themselves round the stakes. They need tying in. https://www.wikihow.com/Grow-Broad-Beans.
If Spanish are like the UK ones, perhaps something like Freshly picked/Fresh Broad Beans? Or Broad Beans straight from the bush (doesn't sound quite right, but you know what I mean). Clearly providing that there isn't a tin in (or out of) sight!

Thank you Comunican. However, I have just looked at Chris' link and they cost 8.75€!! Perhaps the best thing is to ask the restaurant directly what they mean with habas mata.
I wonder if this means beans directly harvested from the plant. Mata in Spanish is also plant. I would think they mean fresh beans but I also don't know if there is a special type of beans of the region in question. What region is this restaurant menu for?
I don't understand why a restaurant would want to advertise with a brand like mata. It doesn't look very appealing to me! And Dominic made me think about this.
