The Spanish expression is very often used for liquids, so I would not discard Noni's option.

This may be another synonym, but I think in the context a "physical body part" reference is needed to somewhat better match the register.

A register that initially sounds more formal and adds this wink of a somewhat colloquial expression.

I would go with Lisa's "showed down" but I would add "your throat" and so I think it'd be better with "gulped" as in "engullir" = "bolt down".
