See the 100's of examples already in Kudoz by entering "viga" en the Proz term search (http://www.proz.com/search/?es=1) using the ES > EN pair.

Several other terms are possible but 'beam' is the most commonly used.

Asker: Could be, but so far I haven't managed to find it in a geomorph/geological context in English and seems to be local (in Spa) to Colombia...

Notes to answerer
Asker: Hi Liz, from what I've read, I'm fairly convinced that "fila" is ridge in Colombian geomorph and the viga is a geologically controlled cross structure, like a roof remnant. The Las Vigas ridge is just a red herring I think! ;o) A reasonable possibility could be "rafter" (as suggested by Sergio), but we just don't seem to be able to back up any term with enough references. :S

Reference: fold and thrust belt

Reference information:
The 'Fila Costeña' is referred as a fold and thrust belt (my guess is that it is English for 'cinturón de plegamiento y cabalgamiento') in this link.
¿Does it make any sense to you?

Asker: Thanks! Fila seems to be a ridge structure, in this case, caused by the thrust ramp. :o)

Reference: rafter

Reference information:
In this document the term "rafter" is used to translate "viga" in this same context (not structural, landforms)

Asker: Ok - this is the second time I've seen "rafter" then. The problem is that it seems to be such a country-specific term that we just don't have a consistent translation. Might go for this though as I can't find "beam" in context. Thanks!
