Explanation:
Aranjuez, municipio español situado en la Comunidad de Madrid, a 51 km al sur de la capital. Situado en la vega del Tajo, ha sido tradicionalmente el centro agrícola abastecedor de Madrid (cuenta con una importante producción hortícola, centrada en el espárrago, el fresón y la alcachofa), y residencia para los monarcas de la Corte desde Felipe II. Ya en tiempos de Fernando el Católico adquirió esa función de ‘real sitio’, que se acrecentó con Felipe II al instalar la capital en la vecina villa de Madrid. Felipe II impulsó la edificación del Palacio Real, comenzado a construir en 1561 por Juan Bautista de Toledo, continuado por Juan de Herrera, y concluido definitivamente en la primera mitad del siglo XIX, bajo el reinado de los Borbones. Juan de Villanueva es el principal arquitecto de la localidad. La Casa del Labrador y los Jardines, que inspiraron a Joaquín Rodrigo su famoso Concierto de Aranjuez, así como al pintor Santiago Rusiñol, son también buenos ejemplos de esta función residencial. En 1808 fue escenario del motín de Aranjuez. El trazado de la localidad sigue un modelo típicamente barroco, a imitación de Versalles. Población (según estimaciones para 1998), 38.680 habitantes.
