Most beaches normally have in more inclined section before changing to a 'plateau'. This point of inflexion or change of inclination is called the shoulder or crown of the beach.

The "isobata" (isobath) is an imaginery constraint line in the sea, in the case above defined at 5 m depth (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isobath). Therefore as the isobath, i.e. the sea, is to the south of the beach and the "espaldón" is to the north it can't be a containing wall to protect the beach because it's behind it.
