On Valencian Community, Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, the
word “ullal” is used to define a specific sort of natural freshwater
springs. The term "ullal" could be literally translated as "eye", and
its use refers to the places where water sources or springs at the
surface, across fractures in the soil, resulting in ponds, usually of
small size, or waterways locally known as “escorredors”. [sic]

The “ullals” often develop a very rich biodiversity, since their
isolation gives them a special value as a shelter for many adapted
species to aquatic environments, especially for those who are
sensitive to the disruption and loss of water quality. In these
springs water emerges continuously, from deep layers of the soil,
free of certain pollutants, that ensures exceptional quality of the
resource. This situation allows that many plants and animals,
disappeared from other wetlands, have survived in “ullals”.
