I have three, apparently different (according to my text) insurance adjusters:

peritos tasadores
comisarios de averías
liquidadores de averías

I've thought about translating them as follows:
peritos tasadores loss adjusters
comisarios de averías average adjusters
liquidadores de averías claims adjusters

What do you think? Does this work? The problem is that dictionaries give the same translation for the last two (average) and sometimes for all three!

Trabajo como traductora en el Dpto de Marine Claims de una Cía de Seguros internacional y te cuento que en muchos casos el comisario de averías es el mismo que el liquidador. Pero la terminología adecuada sería la siguiente:

Liquidador - Average/loss adjuster
Comisario de averías: Surveyor
Perito tasador: experts

En realidad el comisario verifica el daño o la pérdida y se limita a elaborar un informe que incluye un detalle del monto de los daños o pérdidas. Cuando lo hace en forma de liquidación, detalla el monto a pagar y hasta, en algunos casos, cancela ese importe y luego lo reclama a la Compañía (cosa no habitual en la actualidad) se utiliza más el término adjuster. Igualmente en la práctica todos elaboran la hoja de liquidación y se llaman "adjusters" y generalmente concurren al lugar del hecho como "surveyors" o tercerizan esa tarea y sólo elaboran el informe.

Thanks very much everyone. This was tough, with the Mapre insurance dictionary stating that comisario is the same as liquidador. I went for surveyor (thanks Cindy too for your info), as I also found a dictionary definition that fittted.
