El Ministerio Público convocó una audiencia conciliatoria entre la víctima y el agresor. Cada una de las partes expuso su posición y la víctima decidió no continuar con la denuncia. En cambio, solicitó que el Juez aplicara el criterio de oportunidad, es decir, que el proceso penal se suspendiera, siempre que el agresor cumpliera con su parte del acuerdo.

Yo entiendo el concepto de criterio de oportunidad, pero no encuentro una traducción apropiada. Gracias por la ayuda.

The term criterio de oportunidad is analogous to prosecutorial discretion. However, depending on context, there are alternative terms in Enlgish that can be used to translate the one in Spanish, e.g.:

1. negotiated plea, plea bargain, plea agreement
2. deferred prosecution, deferred judgment
3. diversion, alternative dispute resolution

For this context, I woud opt for using a term from the second sense, i.e., ending the case without a conviction, but with some condition.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office ... requested the Judge to apply a deferred judgment, that is, to defer the criminal case, as long as the assailant complied with his part of the agreement.
