Hi,

In "our"contract-type document from Spain, a Spanish organización is identified by its

ES: CIF/NIF S-1111111-J.

Does the following take for any of you guys at all?

EN/UK: Spanish Uniform Personal and Corporate Tax as well as VAT ID S-1111111-J

Thanks,

Cheers,

Taxpayer Identification Number // Tax Identification Number // VAT Number
Explanation:
"CIF" isn't used anymore officially. The "CIF" (código de identificación fiscal) was replaced by the universal "NIF" (used for both individuals and companies). Whenever I see "CIF/NIF" in Spanish documents, I simply translate it as "TIN" or "Taxpayer Identification Number." I assume Spaniards still use "CIF/NIF" due to not realizing that "CIF" isn't valid anymore.

Alternatively, it can be referred to as the "Tax Identification Number." If the context is for VAT purposes, then I would consider using "VAT Number" instead.

Fiscal Identification Certificate/Fiscal Identification Number

Explanation:
- The CIF is the "Certificado de Identificación Fiscal". This translates to "Fiscal Identification Certificate". It is a number used to identify a specific company, usually for tax reasons.
- The NIF is the "Número de Identificación Fiscal". This translates to "Fiscal Identification Number". It is a number used to identify a specific individual, usually for tax reasons.
All individuals in Spain have a NIF. All companies have a CIF.

disagree  Neil Ashby: CIF is not "certificado de ...", it's "código". Secondly, "fiscal" is equivalent to "tax" in this context.

disagree  Michael Grabczan-Grabowski: The CIF (código de identificación fiscal - corporate tax number) isn't used anymore in Spain since 2008. The NIF (número de identificación fiscal - tax identification number) is used for both individuals and companies now.

Tax(payer) (VAT) Identification Code (companies) / Tax(payer) Identification Number (individuals)

Explanation:
NIF = Número de Identificación Fiscal (for individuals) CIF = Certificado de Identificación Fiscal (for companies) It's a Spanish thing ;-) If you couldn't even put your passport number in that field to get.

NIF/CIF What are these? - Google Groups

The Spanish VAT number, is called the CIF (Certificado de Identificación Fiscal). This tax number consist of a letter (ussually A or B) followed by 8 digits (or 7 digits + letter for foreign companies). To be alligned with the European standards, the CIF number is often preceded by 'ES'.

Oops! "Certificate" instead of "Code" for "CIF":

Tax(payer) (VAT) Identification Certificate (companies) / Tax(payer) Identification Number (individuals)

agree  Neil Ashby: tax ID number/code (I think code is more apt because it contains letters as well as numbers). But, again, "CIF" does not mean "certificado", it's "código".

TIN/VAT ID.

neutral  Neil Ashby: This doesn't really add anything to Andres' suggestion, except "VAT" which is inaccurate because they (TIN and VAT No.) are not the same thing.

-> My answer emphasizes that the "CIF" part shouldn't be translated, i.e., the "Tax Identification Number" emcompasses both companies and individuals. So it's a similar answer with a crucial difference (albeit subtle). And the Spanish NIF = VAT number in EU.
